Easy Picture Grids (Contact Sheets in CS4)
Sometimes design consists of mundane layouts, like rows and rows of yearbook photos or graphics in neat columns. Luckily, InDesign CS4 makes it easy to import a group of graphics and place them in a grid all in one go with the new feature: Contact Sheets.
Choose Place from the File menu, navigate to and Command (Ctrl)-Click on the graphics you want to place. Click Open and, with the loaded cursor, press Shift-Command (Shift-Ctrl) and start to drag out the size of your grid. With the mouse button still held down, switch to the Up and Down Arrow keys to change the number of rows in the grid. Use the Right and Left Arrow keys to control the number of columns. Add the Shift key to the arrows to increase or decrease the spacing between rows and columns. Use the page up/page down keys to increase/decrease spacing uniformly between rows and columns. Release the mouse button when you’ve created the desired grid.
This is based on a tip I wrote for Design Tools Monthly, the Executive Summary of Graphic Design News.
